What is sugaring?

Sugaring is an ancient form of body hair removal that is performed using a thick paste consisting of only sugar, lemon, and water. This ball of paste is applied by hand against the natural direction of hair growth. Then, with a quick flick of the wrist, the sugar is removed in the direction of growth, taking the entire hair and root with it. The same ball of sugar paste is used over and over again until the undesired hair has been removed.

+ After Care: For 24 hours after your appointment, you should avoid activities that will cause any friction or sweating. You should also avoid the sun, hot tubs, pools, and cosmetic products that contain fragrance.
+ Home Care: Wait 48 hours before exfoliating. After that initial 48 hours, you can exfoliate twice a week (an exfoliation cloth or glove is best), but please avoid "homemade" sugar or coffee scrubs and coconut oil! Hydrate daily with a hydration serum or sweet almond oil. You can detoxify once per week with a salt bath that can include Epsom, Himalayan or Dead Sea salt.

Home Care and After Care

+ Avoid shaving for at least 7-10 days. Hair must be 1/8" long (that's the length of at least a grain and a half of rice!).

+ Avoid tanning 24 hours prior to your service (definitely no sugaring on sunburns). - Skin free from lotion, oil or deodorant.

+ Avoid exfoliating 24 hours prior to your service for Brazilian or Bikini.  For legs please exfoliate the day prior to appointment.

+ A salt bath soak can help detoxify hair follicles and can be done the day before your service.

How do I prepare for my sugaring appointment?

For your first sugaring experience, you should arrive 5 minutes prior to your service to go over and answer any questions you may have. From there I will step out and give you a moment to prepare and get comfortable for your service.

What can you expect your first time getting sugared?

While skin sensitivity varies, most people experience a slight tingling sensation. Where the hair is denser, the sensation will be stronger. Clients familiar with waxing or using an epilator say that sugaring is far less painful. With regular treatments, the sensation lessens. Also, our sugar paste is not applied hot, so there is no increase in blood supply to the surface of the skin, and therefore no increase in sensitivity. In addition, sugar paste adheres only to dead skin cells (not to living skin cells like waxing!) while still effectively sticking to the hair. This means your skin won't be raw and irritated after your service.

Does sugaring hurt?

Sugar paste is an all-natural, chemical-free product that is applied to the skin at room temperature and removed in the direction of the natural growth. Wax is a chemical product that is applied hot and removed with strips or hard wax in the opposite direction of hair growth.

What's the difference between sugaring and waxing?

Yes, sugaring is safe during your cycle. Please note that as long as you are comfortable wearing a fresh tampon, service can still be completed. I certainly understand that it may be an uncomfortable subject, but please rest assured that everything is handled in a professional manner. If you do not feel comfortable sugaring during your cycle, I understand. Just keep in mind that if you cancel a scheduled appointment, you can still be charged the cancellation fee if you do not provide proper notice.

Can I be sugared during my period?

Yes! Sugaring during pregnancy is perfectly safe, though pregnancy can tend to bring on more sensitivity (especially during the last trimester). It is best to stay on your regular maintenance routine and start sugaring as early as possible. Please note: if you are not an established client and are booking your first sugaring appointment, you must be less 30 weeks along for a Brazilian service. If you're over 30 weeks, we will only do a bikini service.

Is it safe to sugar while pregnant?

For optimal results and benefits, it's best to come in every 3-5 weeks, no longer than 6. During the sugaring process, we are removing the hair and stunting the growth, so it's important to maintain regular treatment.

How often do I need to be sugared?

Due to our limited capacity at The Sugar Shack, please arrive to your appointment alone. Though I love them dearly, children are not permitted in the spa due to safety considerations, liability, and limited space.
